    PESCADERO CREEK EVENT

    Sunday, September 23, 2018

Please join us for a special presentation & workshop at Pescadero Creek Lagoon!

On Sunday, September 23rd, from 10 AM to 1 PM, the Steinbeck and Golden Gate Chapters of Trout Unlimited, the Peninsula Fly Fishers, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will be co-hosting a special event at the Pescadero Creek Lagoon.

Jon Jankovitz from CDFW and Tim Frahm from TU will be sharing their knowledge about the status of steelhead on the Central Coast, efforts to improve habitat and increase their abundance, and the importance of Pescadero Creek. In addition, they will be talking about how YOU can help by assisting in a campaign to get Pescadero classified as a Wild Heritage Trout Stream.  You will be asked to volunteer for additional work on Pescadero Creek (completion/collection of angler surveys, designated work on the creek, etc.) which will help tremendously in restoration efforts. For fly anglers, there will be a special segment devoted to tips, techniques, and access points for fishing Pescadero.

Following the presentations, the Peninsula Fly Fishers will host a lunch at the lagoon.  To each attendee…we ask that you please make a $5.00 contribution to defray expenses for the lunch at the event.

Attendance will be limited to 15 Peninsula Fly Fisher Members!  In addition to the group from PFF, there will be approximately 25 additional Trout Unlimited members (from the peninsula area) coming to the event.  This will be a great opportunity to recruit new members to PFF, and for any PFF members, the opportunity to become members of Trout Unlimited (if you are not already).

Due to limited parking at Pescadero Creek, we ask PFF members that attend the event to carpool to & from the event.  If you have questions contact Ron Beltramo, who is coordinating this event for PFF.  To sign up for the event, send an e-mail to Ron Beltramo (rjbeltramo@aol.com), and he will add you to the list of attendees.

Chase the Neon Rocket, One Week in Mexico Fishout,

                                          October 14-21

Dorado! Warm weather,  Cold cerveza and a variety of fish species to catch. This can all be yours at a convenient base price of appox. $1875.00.  Not including air fare, beverages and tips.

This is a great introduction for beginners that want to venture into saltwater and a challenge for the experienced saltwater fisherperson. 6 days of fishing.

October is the time to target Dorado (aka Dolphinfish, Mahi-Mahi) which are among the fastest, most acrobatic, and colorful game fish in the seas. It doesn't stop there, as 21 different species of fish are waiting in the Sea of Cortez  including: Seirra, Ship Jack, Casanero grouper, toro, pargo, casaneros, tuna and even the ever present needle fish. There are also larger species for those that want to hunt sails or wahoo.

We stay at the Palapas Ventana resort near La Paz. The stay includes all meals, guides, and boats. Days begin with an early breakfast, we head to the boats at sunrise and fish the local water until 3:00PM (plus or minus an hour depending on conditions and fish). Head back to the resort to freshen up and meet at the cantina around 5:00 for stories, drinks, and appetizers (sometimes made with selections from the days fishing). Dinner follows, then back to the air-conditioned castias for a nights sleep. Then we wake up in the morning and do it all over again! Fantastic!

Space is limited and if interested call Rich Catanzaro (650) 268-2024 for registration.

    Advice and information:

You do need a steelhead card (see your local sporting goods store).  You don't need a guide, there are plenty of places on the river to catch fish.  Please don't fish alone.  Always fish with a buddy.

Weather - be prepared for anything.  Bring rain gear and long john's in addition to the usual stuff: waders, hats sunglasses, wading staff.

This is big water expect (sometimes) big fish

ROD SIZE: 5 to 9 weights 6 weight is best.  I bring a 7 weight if the water is big and needs a bit more.

LINE: Depending on the water the best right now is a floating line with a sink tip.   You never know.  Bring a sinking line and a floating line. This is steel head fishing be prepared.

LEADER: This water is grayish and short leaders are okay

6.5lb, 3X or 8lb, 2x or 10lb. The 4X is a good middle of the road. 3X work well if you’re optimistic. Use your own judgment and capabilities on this.

    FLIES:

It is going to depend on the rain and the water level as to the fishing and the flies.  The stand by that you want to take is:

The cost is $135 per rod.

We are excited to be able to offer access to Luk Lake, formerly known as Coffee Cup Lake, a great wintertime and springtime rainbow trout destination and year 'round bass fishery.

    Lake Location:

Luk Lake is a 65+ acre lake conveniently located just minutes from Interstate 5 in Corning, California, behind the Rolling Hills Casino. The lake's varied shoreline is lined with vegetation and flanked by the rolling golden hillsides of the Central Valley. Its low-elevation location keeps the lake waters (and outside air temperatures) moderate and comfortable throughout the winter and spring, providing ideal habitat for rainbow trout until the water temperatures grow too warm in the summertime. All year, however, Luk Lake exemplifies ideal bass habitat. It's not at all uncommon to land trophy sized bass, sunfish, and rainbow trout all in the same day at Luk Lake!

Gear and Fly information :November through February:

The winter season at Luk Lake is prime time to target its trophy-sized rainbow trout. Water temperatures remain ideal for trout feeding and active fish throughout these cooler months, and daytime temperatures are typically cool but comfortable for anglers, too. There's always a chance of wintry weather, so it can be a good idea to check the local forecasts before coming, but as long as it's not dumping inches of rain or extremely windy, the lake usually fishes great.

The most consistent wintertime fishing is generally stripping leeches, woolly buggers, damselfly nymphs, or other streamer patterns on either floating, intermediate, or even full sinking lines. Still, it's not uncommon to observe cruising fish slurping emerging midges in the middle of the day, and Stillwater anglers with the patience to suspend midge larvae patterns under indicators frequently find this technique to be very effective. 4,5 and 6 weight rods recommended.

There is a boat launch for anglers who choose to use their own float tubes. You are also welcome to launch your own small boats (14 feet long or less) if you prefer. Gas motors are not allowed, but electric trolling motors are acceptable. There are also boats available. Please contact the Redding Fly Shop to confirm 800-669-3474

Luk Lake is over 65 acres in size, with numerous coves, peninsulas, and weed beds. The thick shoreline weeds provide ample cover and vegetation for the lake's resident bass and sunfish, and also provide food for cruising rainbow trout in the wintertime. Trout fishermen find that fishing small midge dry flies and midge clusters can be productive throughout the wintertime, as well as dead drifting midge patterns under indicators. Stripping small streamers and damselfly nymphs can be very productive, and also creates opportunities to catch bass. In the warmer months, fishing damselfly adults, dragonflies, frogs, mice, and bass poppers can all be productive for the lake's bigger bass.
