Upper Sacramento River American Shad Angling Areas

BEWARE: This information is old; some of it may not be reliable. Rivers change. Roads change. Property owners revise their public access policies. Corrections of inaccuracies in this document are sought.

Reservation Road
Angling is good during the early season for fly and spin anglers. This area is located seven miles north of Colusa off Highway 45. Turn east on Reservation Road and drive to the river.

Princeton Gravel Bar
Angling is good during the early season for fly and spin anglers. It can be reached by turning east of Highway 45 in Princeton and driving up over the levee. The turn is marked by a burnt-out service station. I advise not driving over the gravel bar to the river unless you have extra money for a tow truck.

Road 48
Good angling during the early season for fly and spin anglers. Road 48 is located off Highway 45 just north of Glenn.

Hawaiian Gardens
Good angling for spin fishermen. Located north of Glenn on Highway 45 about a quarter-mile below Hawaiian Gardens reservoir.

Ordbend
Good angling throughout the season for fly and spin anglers. This area is located just south of the Ordbend Bridge on the east bank of the river. It can be reached from Highway 45 by turning toward the river on the main intersection in Ordbend. Boat launch available.

Road 29
Good angling throughout the season for fly and spin anglers. It is located about ten miles south of Hamilton City off Highway 45.

The "Washout"
Good angling throughout the season for fly and spin fishermen. Located on the east bank, it may be reached by taking the river road south from Highway 32. There are two resorts, Scottie's and Pine Creek Landing between the "Washout" and Highway 32.

Woodson Bridge
Good angling during middle of season for fly and spin anglers. Woodson Bridge can be reached via the Gardiner Ferry Road from Highway 5 at Corning or from Highway 99 north of Chico.

Tehama Bridge
Good angling from middle to late in the season. Majority of angling is done from boats, although, shore angling occurs on the east bank about 150 yards south of the Tehama Bridge. Tehama Bridge (where shad were originally introduced in California, 1871) is located south of Los Molinas at Tehama.

Hunters Resort (Tennyson Riffle)
Good shore angling late in season. To get to this location, turn west off Highway 99 on Le Claire Avenue (seven miles north of Los Molinas) and drive to metal gate at road's end. The name of Le Claire Avenue changes to Decker Avenue and then to Bryne before road's end. Good only if water is down.

Red Bluff Dam
Good angling late in season. Majority of angling is done from boats, although, shore spin casting is possible. River access is located off Highway 99 at the salmon viewing plaza. Turn south from Highway 99 on Williams Drive and continue to Gilmore. Turn right on Gilmore and drive to salmon viewing plaza. Boat ramp is just downstream.
