Upper Sac June 2010

June 2010

I hosted my annual Northern Cal family fishing trip this past weekend.  Those in attendance included my brothers John and Jeff, Jeff’s son Nick, my father his brothers Jim & Jack, and Jack’s son Dennis.

This year we stayed in a beautiful custom-built home located right on the Upper Sac, but because of the unusually wet winter the river was blown out and we were unable to fish the run behind the house.  The McCloud below Mud Creek was also blown, so we knew we’d have to go searching for calmer waters.

We arrived in Castella on Thursday, and that afternoon we headed east and found a stretch of water that was high but fishable.  It was also very crowded, and my brother John and I ended up trailblazing our way through a hundred feet of blackberry vines in order to reach a quiet, unoccupied pool at the base of a cliff.  Once we got there I could see that there was only room for one angler, so I sat on a rock and enjoyed a cigar while John went at it.  He tied on a nymph but had no luck with it, then switched to a dry and had some hits but wasn’t able to hook anything.  Jeff and Nick found better luck upstream.

The next morning John and I headed over to Wayne Eng’s house and Wayne took us to a beautiful creek that he knew was fishing well.  John only gets out once a year, so Wayne spent most of the day with him and put him onto a dozen or so nice fish.  Wayne is an excellent teacher and John had a really great time.

Saturday Jeff made a nice breakfast, after which some of the group went to Dunsmuir to watch the Railroad Days parade.  They returned in time for an early dinner and then headed over to a local lake with their float tubes.  Jeff caught several nice bass, and John and Nick each landed a nice trout just before nightfall.  Both of the rainbows were caught on hopper patterns, which somewhat surprised me.

John cooked a nice breakfast Sunday, after which we cleaned up the house, loaded up the trucks, and headed home.
